After Adam’s response, we read in Genesis 2:24, “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” The action verb become refers to a sexual knowing, but intimacy also entails emotional, intellectual, and spiritual knowing. In addition, knowing oneself is a critical developmental task that ideally precedes intimacy with another. In the passage, it seems that man’s leaving is predicated on a self-identity that makes it possible for him to build a
